Believe in Something or Fall for Anything
So I let a little pee and vinegar escape. I let some of the things I oppose escape…so what am I for? How should it be done..ya know…starting a project like this?
I am not sure there is one right way to go about it. I think that is exactly the point. Individual results may vary and the call that God put on Moses and the call God put on David and John the Baptist and Ruth were different. As such, I do not think you can put something through a matrix and create a formula for individual calls. There are some things that are important and there are some things one should and should not do.
Overall, I think it is churches that should be in the business of making churches and minsters in the business of training ministers. I hate to use Star Wars as a reference, but I think the Master and the Padawan is the best thing. Now, a gathering of churches be it an association or a denomination is a helpful thing. Church is not a building..it is like Ubuntu…you and me and all of us on a journey to follow Jesus and live like Jesus. That said, I think the denominations and associations need to loosen up the formulas and allow God the opportunity to lead this thing. If we believe he made all of this and if we believe that God used ordinary people in the Bible to do his will and accomplish some great things…then we need to know that God may call people who do not fit into our molds to do God’s will. God seems to have a funny sense of humor or irony or something in that the least of these tend to do some pretty cool things.
In my case I had to go back to Bible college. I knew there were some important things I needed..and still need to learn about the Bible and theology…but a degree in my hands does not make me qualified or called…it just means I know some stuff that is rather important. In my case I needed someone who not only thought like me on some core issues, but was a few steps ahead of me on the trail. Enter Fran and Lifespring. I willfully subjected myself to their authority. We have no document, agreement, or anything. We have no test, assessment, or grading procedure…we have a relationship and I have a willingness to learn. Most of the time I learn from their example. Other times I will be fleshing something out aloud and Fran will say some things. Sometimes they are not easy to hear..sometimes I initially bristle…but in the end..I find the lesson. I adopt it into this vision…and we all grow.
What I am doing and what this will look like will not be a clone of Lifespring…but the core of what we are will be the same. A horrible analogy. Both bodies are Bonsai trees…they are rooted in the same soil and they are both healthy, but the carving will be different. Our service will differ, our worship will differ, our communion will differ, but what we stand for and believe in and the journey we are on is the same. But that comes from apprenticeship and not a formula. That comes from an organic union seeped in love and it is a beautiful expression of the great commission, but there is no rubric.
So there you go. Apprenticeship is the word for the day.
